“Why aren’t there more young adults in our parishes?” This is a multi-faceted question that begs for a multi-faceted answer. More simply, we as “Church” need to reach out to young people who already work as leaders in business, the medical field, in education and who are young parents themselves. These are people who are struggling to live lives of value in a world whose values point to every direction but the person of Jesus Christ. As Church, we are called to support these young people in their journey.

We are embarking on the beginning of a third generation after Vatican Council Two, and have not catechized well in the last two generations: we have not been able to help young people understand and embrace their Catholic faith and identity. When a person cannot understand his or her identity with a particular group, much less articulate that identity, then it would be natural to seek ones’ identity elsewhere, individually or with others. This might be one reason why young people do not come to many of our churches.

Listed below are some of the questions from the website of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which I have heard from young adults in the Diocese of San Jose.
Are there people around who share my values?
The bars are good, but is there anything else?
How do you meet good people once you've moved here?
What does it mean to be a person of faith today?
Is there any decent worship around?
Where can I give some of my time or talent?

As a response to this phenomenon, we have partnered with RENEW International in offering a portal as a first step reaching out to young adults and welcoming them back to their Catholic roots. This portal is known as Theology on Tap. For young people who identify themselves as Catholics but admit to not knowing what “Catholic” is, walking in the front door of a church may not be the easiest thing to do or something that comes to mind to someone who is baptized but not catechized in their faith. A more comfortable way of learning about their Catholic faith is with their peers, during a meal, in conversation with a speaker knowledgeable in the Catholic faith, where questions can be asked anonymously.

Theology on Tap, has been around for a generation, begun by Fr. John Cusick in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Silicon Valley Young Adults from St. Cyprian parish began hosting the first in a two year series of TOT events at Scruffy Murphy’s Restaurant and Pub in Sunnyvale in January 2005.

In 2003, Fr. Cusick approached RENEW International to formally oversee, standardize and uphold the integrity of this ministry which has sprung up all over the country and throughout the world. RENEW agreed and as of January 1, 2007, all Theology on Tap programs and processes will be supported through this new partnership. The feedback I have heard from those who have participated in the Theology on Tap events is that there is little or no follow-up for these young people.

Through RENEW-Theology on Tap, Young Adults who wish to go deeper into their faith will be assisted to form and lead small faith sharing communities in their parishes. The dream for RENEW-Theology on Tap is for Young Adults to enter into the life and mission of the parish as passionate disciples of Jesus Christ and to share this passion in the world.

RENEW-Theology on Tap has developed training for parish leaders to understand the characteristics and needs of this deeply spiritual generation who long for the concrete religiosity of a faith community. We were young adults once, but the experiences and characteristics that have marked us as belonging to a particular generation, is not the same as theirs, and it behooves us to be aware of these characteristics and those of every generation that comes after this one. Soon it will be the task of this young generation to understand the generation emerging on the heel of their footsteps.

We are planning to hold additional training for parish leaders which are invaluable whether or not parishes are planning to incorporate the RENEW-Theology On Tap process.

The TOT slam is just around the corner, so named by Darlene Tenes, Coordinator for Theology on Tap. Darlene has coordinated the Theology on Tap sessions that have been sponsored by the Diocese of San Jose this past fall, launched a special website devoted to Theology on Tap in the Silicon Valley http://totsiliconvalley.com, coordinated several locations for Theology on Tap, lined up publicity and marketing for the events, and referred many new speakers for the Speaker’s Bureau.

Deanery Two parishes, under the leadership of their dean, Fr. Larry Percell, have
offered their full support to the Deanery Two Young Adult Leadership Group. They
will be kicking off their TOT events on the following Sundays at 7:30 pm:
1/28, 2/11, 2/25, and 3/11.
Location is being worked out and details will be coming soon.

St. Cyprian’s will host their TOT events on Sundays, 7:30 pm:
2/18, 2/25, 3/18, 3/25 at Scruffy Murphy’s Restaurant and Pub, 187 S. Murphy Ave., Sunnyvale.

In Deanery 7, Fr. Jojo Page is the contact for the Young Adult group at St. Catherine in Morgan Hill and planning Theology on Tap events for the month of March in Lent. Dates and location will be announced.

In Deanery 5, we will be seeing some Theology on Tap action for Lent as well. Details on the way.

The Diocese of San Jose Young Adult Leadership Board will oversee and resource Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese of San Jose, including Theology On Tap, Justice Action, and Worship for Young Adults which they have stated as their areas priority.

They met for the first time as a board on December 14. Two actions agreed upon by the board are 1) that there is a member from each deanery at the monthly board meetings, and 2) that a website for Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese of San Jose be launched for the New Year. Regarding the first action, we need a representative from only one deanery which will happen in the next month with the names of the board published in the daily bulletin soon after. Living the Dream: Faith, Justice, Action!

Day of Reflection on Social Justice on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at Holy Family Parish, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On Saturday, January 13, 2007, the parishes of Deanery 7 (the Southwest Deanery) will come together for a day of prayer, study and reflection on the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church and the call to live our lives according to those teachings. The goal of the day is to help the people of each parish identify the issues that most compel them to action as well as to find ways in which we can collaborate on such action as a deanery.
This day will provide all who participate with a chance to begin to form a plan to help to transform the world. We will be addressing important issues that are impacting our local community, our nation, and our world: injustices caused by poverty, lack of respect for life in all its forms, exploitation of workers, inhumane immigration laws, inadequate health and safety regulations, fair trade, responsibility for our environment and other issues that involve us as part of God’s family.
Keynote speakers will be Fr. Jon Pedigo and Greg Kepferle from Catholic Charities. Workshops and discussion groups will be offered, as well as lunch. Why should you come? Because the dream of a just world starts with individuals like you, people who are so bothered by the iniquity around them that they want to stop talking about it and start doing something about it. Because this will be a gathering of people like you. Because, together, we can change the world. This day of Social Justice is open to people from all parishes in our diocese. We welcome ALL Young Adults to come explore your Catholic Faith and meet other Catholic Young Adults in our community. We invite YOU to join us for our SFS YA (Social, Faith Sharing and Service Young Adult) group which meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings for a faith talk or other activity.

This Tuesday, Dec 19th - take a break from the malls and other Christmas activity and join us for our meeting at 7:30pm in the Adult Education Office. We will be doing a Bible Study and will talk about upcoming social and community service activities. Come join in on some spiritual preparation as we continue our Advent journey and await the Season of Christmas!!
Jan 2nd - This will be our next SFS-YA scheduled meeting. Please plan ahead and make it your New Year's resolution to drop by.

We are young adults primarily in our 20's and 30's who are connected by our Catholic faith and actively participate in the life of the Church. We meet regularly for spiritual growth and reflection, fun events, and service projects.

This Mass is offered to and for the young adults of our Deanery (northern grouping of parishes in the Diocese of San Jose which includes Palo Alto, Stanford, Los Altos, and Mountain View), yet is open to any and all young adults from college-age to early 40s.
The liturgy is smaller and more intimate, focusing on introductions and a conversational/ dialogue homily, followed by fellowship and refreshments afterward.

I’m writing you to enlist your support of a vocations event that will take place on February 2nd at Mitty High School. That evening (at 7:00) a group of priests will play a basketball game against our seminarians. My hope is that you will support this event by buying a ticket, attending, and allowing us to sell tickets at your parish the weekend of January 6/7. The seminarians, Knights, and Serrans would come to your parish that weekend and do all the work. The suggested donation is $10 per adult, $5 per child or a donation of the individual’s choice. We’d also like to put a piece in your bulletin some time in December so that people will know about this. Since Mitty’s gym holds 1200 people comfortably, we’re hoping to sell that number of tickets.

As you know, every three years the Church holds World Youth Day. In 2008, this gathering will take place in Sydney, Australia. Talking with vocation directors around the country, it’s very clear that a significant number of seminarians have gone to a World Youth Day and been encouraged to pursue their vocation while there. For the past year, I’ve been laying the groundwork to have our seminarians go to Sydney with the youth and young adults of our Diocese. So far, we’ve raised $30,000 to do this. However, we anticipate that it will require about $60,000 to send all of our seminarians there.

Some may argue that there are better uses for this kind of money. However, as our diocese is highlighting, in our pastoral plan, ministry among youth and young adults, this seems a superb way to have our future priests mixing with and supporting the youth of our Diocese. And I hope and pray that among those attending World Youth Day will be some whom the Lord is calling to the priesthood or consecrate life. Supporting those vocations should be among the highest priorities of our Diocese.

I greatly appreciate your support of vocations in general and the work I do in particular. Please know that I keep you and your people in my daily prayers.

...Several parishes in Deanery 7 are making preparations to support their Young Adults with this ministry as well, particularly at St. Catherine's and St. Julie's. St. Lucy's, St. Christopher and St. Mary-Los Gatos have sent representatives to the training. Some good news is that new leadership has emerged at St. Cyprian's Parish and they are interested in continuing TOT begun at Scruffy Murphy's almost two years ago. The proprieter and owner of Scruffy's, Sean O'Keeffe, a young adult himself, is interested in supporting and understanding this ministry and came to our training last week. We want to make it very clear that this ministry is being offered as a response to so many young adults and parish staff who have asked for ways to reach out to this generation. It is a tool for your use which you may or may not find helpful for your parish at this time. The purpose of this TOT-RENEW approach is to strengthen parish life through the presence of the young and to reach out to the young who need Church in their lives. Most importantly, this ministry is a way for young adults to be empowered and supported in, for, by and through the shaping of this ministry. Let TOT- Renew be the portal that brings people together, but not the only ministry of Young Adults. There are retreat ministires, justice and service ministries etc., that need to be incorporated into Young Adult ministry so that it becomes multi-faceted, comprehensive and multi-dimensional.

YA Halloween Mass

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday evening, Oct 31th, at 7:30
and each final Tuesday of every month for our monthly Young Adult
Mass. This Mass is offered to and for the young adults of our
Deanery (northern grouping of parishes in the Diocese of San Jose
which includes Palo Alto, Stanford, Los Altos, and Mountain View),
yet is open to any and all young adults from college-age to early
40s. The liturgy is smaller and more intimate, focusing on
introductions and a conversational/dialogue homily, followed by
fellowship and refreshments.

Prior to mass, Laura Lessard of the Stanford Young Adults is
organizing a pre-Mass Second Harvest Food Drive on Halloween night.
This involves dressing up in costume and collecting food in the
neighborhoods surrounding St. Joseph's Church.

Afterwards, there will be a Halloween party hosted by the Young
Adults of St. Joseph's parish inside Fr. Doyle Hall in the church

for the after Mass party. You can help them out by bringing
non-alcoholic beverages or a donation to help offset the cost.

Taize Prayer (named for the town in France where the movement
originated) is simple Christian phrases/chants set to music and
then repeatedly sung in community, with veneration of the cross
during the service. This ecumenical spiritual experience draws
people from all over the Bay Area. Please bring a pillow to pray
in comfort, either in pews or on the carpeted floor.
Socializing/food after the service is optional.

The lecture series sponsored by the Stanford Catholic Community
has been named to honor Pierre Dumaine, the first Bishop of San
Jose who has been a longtime supporter of our community.

Fr. William Stoeger, S. J., will speak on a topic of great interest
and heated debate in the last few years around the contention
between evolution and creationism: whether Darwinian notions of
natural selection leave room for intelligent design by a divine
Creator, whether scientific explanations of the origins of life
exclude the claims of faith and religious belief.

Fr. Stoeger is an expert on the subject. A distinguished astronomer
at the Vatican Observatory located at the University of Arizona, he
speaks as a scientist and a man of faith. His lecture is titled
"Science and Theology: Creation and Natural Processes," and two
short pieces by Fr. Stoeger on the subject will be available on
the Catholic Community at Stanford web site for those who might
want to read them in advance of his talk. The talk is open to the
public and all are invited. Bishop Dumaine and Bishop McGrath will
join us for this important occasion.

This workshop will train the local young adult teams
to market, host, and prepare the Theology on Tap series

they will host for the Lenten season.

Habitat for Humanity Building

The Young Adult Circle is starting to team up with Habitat for
Humanity in both San Jose and the upper Peninsula with some
ongoing projects and a fundraiser in October.

Silicon Valley Habitat for Humanity has several building projects
currently in San Jose: restoring two Victorians at 13th and Julian,
building 5 homes on Murphy Street, and a one home Women's Build at
Willow Street.

We work 8 to 4, Wednesday through Sunday. Tools are provided. Wear
sturdy shoes and bring your lunch.

Monthly Taize Prayer at Mercy Center

Taize Prayer (named for the town in France where the movement
originated) is simple Christian phrases/chants set to music and
then repeatedly sung in community, with veneration of the cross
during the service. This ecumenical spiritual experience draws

in comfort, either in pews or on the carpeted floor.

1. To understand how this TOT-RENEW framework works:
The local leadership teams determine the topics, the dates the location. The DSJ YA TOT Team coodinated by Darlene Tenes, approves speakers to the Speaker's Bureau, assists the local teams in coordinating their calendars, and finds sites for the local teams to use. Local teams can use other sites. Local teams will be given special training on "how to" set up, market, plan their series.

2. To find out how much it will cost:
$100 per parish per year to TOT-Renew for materials and training plus approximately $1250 per 4 session series. (If 3 or 4 parishes are partnering to sponsor one series than the $1250 is divided among the four parishes. This cost goes predominantly to pay the speakers. Other costs may include publicity.

3. To find out how much of your time and energy this will cost you:
As a pastor, priest or parish leader, your major responsibilities are: to know how this works so you can spread the good news; to scout around for "hip" "smart" young adults to attend the orientation with you.

4.To find out how this process can empower and support young adults:
By doing number 1 above, we will be empowering and supporting young adults to do this ministry for Young Adults with and by Young Adults.

5.To find out how this framework preserves the integrity of the TOT-RENEW process:
In order to preserve the intergrity of the TOT process - TOT has partnered with RENEW International and as of January 1, 2007, TOT will not be offered except through this process.

6. To understand that TOT is not an end in itself: The follow-up to the TOT speaker series is the invitation to the small Christian community experience which young adults have voiced as one of their primary needs. The ultimate goal of this entire process is relationship with Jesus Christ, celebrated in worship with the parish community and seen through actions of peace and justice for the good of the greater community.

7. To get the info you need to decide if this process can support you in your mnistry to Young Adults:
Get the info and then you can say YES, no, maybe, or soon. It is the least we can do for Young Adults. And it is free!

8. Finding new ways to reach out, connect and engage young adults to the Church is central to the Pastoral Plan of the DSJ!

The list will eventually serve all young adults in San Jose's "Deanery 2" (St. Athanasius, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Nicholas, St. William, St. Simon, St. Joseph and Stanford) and those beyond that elect to be on the list. Sometime in the next few weeks you will receive a yahoogroup "invitation" to join. In order to continue to receive Deanery 2 wide emails, you need to respond to the invitation in the affirmative within a 30 day window as the list will be "closed," i.e. not open to random people joining on a lark.

The Family Giving Tree Back to School Drive

In Santa Clara County, 85,000 children are enrolled in the California Free or Reduced Lunch Program (Title 1). This year, the Family Giving Tree aims to provide 15,000 children in the Title 1 program with a new backpack containing tools they need to succeed. Help stuff these backpacks with school supplies alongside hundreds of volunteers from the local community. Kids 8 and older are welcome as well.

Join us as we embark on our annual adventure into the wine country on Saturday, August 12 from 7:30 am - 6:30 pm.

This year we will be traveling to Napa Valley to taste wine (V. Sattui, Rutherford Grove, Beringer)and olive oil (St. Helena Olive Oil Company), and have an opportunity to attend a cooking demonstration at the Culinary Institute.

We will be traveling by bus. Total cost for the day will be between $50-$65. We will be buying a lunch at the V. Sattui deli and we will return to Stanford by dinner time. Even if you aren't a drinker, there will be plenty of fun things to see and do.

Taize Prayer at Mercy Center
Dear Fellow YA,
Every first Friday of every month, Taize Prayer Around the Cross is offered at Mercy Center in Burlingame at 8 p.m. This ecumenical spiritual experience draws people from all over the Bay Area. Taize (named for the town in France where the ecumenical movement originated) is simple Christian phrases/chants set to music and then repeatedly sung in community. Some of you may well be familiar with Taize heard mostly during Lent (Stay with Me, Jesus Remember Me, etc.). The Young Adults of the Diocese of San Jose have a long-standing tradition of monthly carpooling to Mercy Center for Taize, then going out for dinner afterward.
Carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited and prime seating is at a premium, so it is best to arrive at Mercy Center by 7:30.
Please bring a pillow to pray in comfort.

Hello Everyone!

Just a quick reminder about a couple of upcoming social events taking place through St. Mary's Young Adult Group in Los Gatos (also known as St. Mary's SFSYA group).

Check your schedules and if either of the following interests you, let me know ASAP. Please, please respond if you would like to attend. We would like to have an accurate count of those who intend to join us so that we can be sure to have enough food, tickets, etc..

First off: A bbq/picnic on Sunday, June 25th at 12:30 p.m. at the grass lot off of Lyndon Ave. (behind the church) at St. Mary's in Los Gatos. Festivities are planned to start around 12:30 p.m. and end sometime around 3:30 p.m.. Feel free to join us for the 11:15 a.m. mass at St. Mary's and then simply walk to the grass lot afterward. Good food, good company and bonus--live music!!!

prayer, fellowship and ministry through the Catholic Community at

Taize Prayer at Mercy Center
Dear Fellow YA,

Every first Friday of every month, Taize Prayer Around the Cross
is offered at Mercy Center in Burlingame at 8 p.m. This
ecumenical spiritual experience draws people from all over the Bay
Area.

Taize (named for the town in France where the ecumenical movement
originated) is simple Christian phrases/chants set to music and
then repeatedly sung in community. Some of you may well be
familiar with Taize heard mostly during Lent (Stay with Me, Jesus
Remember Me, etc.).

The Young Adults of the Diocese of San Jose have a long-standing
tradition of monthly carpooling to Mercy Center for Taize, then
going out for dinner afterward.

Carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited and prime seating is

at a premium, so it is best to arrive at Mercy Center by 7:30.
Please bring a pillow to pray in comfort.

YA Work Retreat-Connecting Young Adults in the DSJ

Hello everyone,

I hope you are having a wonderful Easter Season. As we move back into ordinary time and the beginning of summer, we have some great events planned. Feel free to join us for one or all of the following events, which are based upon our goal of having social, faith sharing, and service opportunities:

1. Come and help the needy with a service project for EHC lifebuilders, a non-profit organization that works directly with the homeless in Santa Clara County. St. Mary's Church in downtown Los Gatos will be hosting a rummage sate from 7 am until 5 pm, with 2-hour shifts. Help is needed the most from 7 am until 9 am; however, any time you can give would be great. I am planning on being there for the early morning shift and the last shift, with the hope of attending the 5 pm mass. I hope you can join me!

2. Come and help prepare and serve food at the Commercial Street Inn in Downtown San Jose from 4:30 until 7:30 pm on June 11. We had such a great time last time we did this, we are doing this again! Meet at St. Mary's kitchen at 4:30 pm. DUE TO SPACE REQUIREMENTS, THIS PROJECT IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 6 PEOPLE WHO RSVP.

3. Come and join us for a BBQ on June 25 at St. Mary's lawn area. Mass is at 11:15 am, followed by a picnic from 12:30 until 3:30 pm. Famed musician Nelson and his crew will be joining us for some praise and worship! Please RSVP so we know how much food to purchase.

4. Join us as we attend a San Jose Giants game at 5 pm on July 29, 2006! We will be leaving St. Mary's parking lot at 4 pm, where you can pick up your game ticket. Please RSVP so we know how many tickets to buy.

5. Stay tuned for a possible beach excursion in August!

Our young adult group is currently in the middle of planning events for the summer.

According to a proposed immigration bill in Congress, illegal immigrants found in the United States and any people who help them, including social service and church groups, could be arrested and charged with a felony. What do you think about this? Should illegal immigrants be permitted to stay in the United States? I’ve been [in the United States] for two months, and I’ve seen so many things on the news and it feels like America says it’s the land of the free but all of the politics here aren’t very welcoming. It’s not a felony to leave your country to try to find a better situation for yourself and your family. That’s what human beings do to survive. When you ask people where they’re from, no one is actually Native American. Who gets to decide who’s American and who’s not American? We know that the doomed September 11th flight out of Newark airport will be overtaken by terrorists and targeted for the U.S. Capitol. We also know that a group of passengers will rally and force the plane to crash in a field in Shanksville, PA with no survivors. Greengrass gives Americans the chance to re-live a piece of our national nightmare and nearly five years later the wound is still fresh; having known a member of the flight crew personally made an already difficult film to watch into an excruciating experience. The Community of Sant'Egidio invites lay Catholics to lives of prayer and social concernby Eileen MarkeyMost of the great scenes in the Gospels are portraits of believers together. Jesus is almost always with friends, always with a crowd. The abiding Easter images of the newborn church are the disciples in the upper room together, the friends recognizing the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus only after a shared meal. Community is central to Church.But for many young Catholics, divorced from parish life or missing the strong faith communities they found on college campuses, living the communal aspect of their spiritual lives is difficult. The religious impulse becomes something personal and private.
The Community of Sant'Egidio, a Vatican II-inspired movement for lay people, was founded to share the benefits of a structured religious order with single and married people who are not priests, nuns or brothers.
It's a movement within the Catholic Church, founded in Rome in 1968 and supported by the Vatican that links lay people in a life of prayer, service and friendship. More popular in Europe, Sant'Egidio is beginning to grow in the United States. There are communities in five states and Washington, D.C., totaling approximately 100 members, according to Andrea Bartoli, who joined nearly 40 years ago in his native Italy. [more]

Skunks, semantics and the art of spin by Doug DuBrinWith its mix of equal parts “The Bachelor” and “Jackass” with a spiritual twist, A&E’s new reality series, “God or the Girl” has people talking. The five-part show follows the lives of four young men who struggle with making a decision to pursue studying for the priesthood instead of staying in a relationship with a significant other.
The four “contestants” offer an accurate reflection of the diversity of young adult faith experiences, ranging from highly pious to the irreverent. While "God or the Girl" makes an attempt to honestly portray how these men struggle with their decision, it sometimes stoops to sprinkling in stupid antics that tends to tilt the show in the direction of an extreme sports version of spiritual exercises that has little to do with a real faith journey. Pure Sex, Pure LoveUpdating the Best of Pure Sex, Pure Love’s First Year by Dr. Christine B. Whelan
For more than a year, I've been writing the Pure Sex, Pure Love column for BustedHalo. We've covered some big topics: When to bring up your faith in a new relationship, how to make sure you are being open to meeting the right person, and, of course, the thorny topics of sex - is premarital sex always a sin, and how far is too far when it comes to intimacy before marriage?
As a social scientist, I've used online polls to get a sense of what BustedHalo readers think about these topics. Through the answers I receive, I hope to take a snapshot of the opinions of the young-adult Catholic community as a whole.
Usually, the poll for the upcoming column is posted alongside the previous week's column. A few weeks later when I'm writing the next column, I tally the results that have accumulated and report my findings.
But the story doesn't end there. My columns—and those polls—remain posted on BustedHalo and continue to attract many new readers and numerous responders all the time.
Did more responses change the results? Absolutely, you'll be surprised by what I found. [more]

As the sixth season of The Sopranos passes the half-way mark, we need to momentarily disentangle ourselves from such pressing questions and address an even bigger issue: why is it that we still care?
It’s not because of the menace in Tony Soprano’s eyes when somebody crosses him, or the periodic explosions of violence when wise guys clash over money and respect—as fun as those things are. The answer, I believe, is that The Sopranos is not just wonderful storytelling but that it addresses moral experience and moral choice with a complexity and honesty that is rare in pop culture. Prayer for Peaceby Eileen Markey
In a day-long conference at Georgetown University this Thursday April 27, Christians, Jews and Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists and others are taking part in the 2006 International Prayer for Peace, entitled "Religions and Cultures: the Courage of Dialogue."
It is the 20th annual such event sponsored by the Community of Sant'Egidio, religious group dedicated to prayer, service and friendship.
The first gathering was convened by Pope John Paul II in the Italian city of Assisi in 1986. The International Prayer for Peace is the world's largest ongoing intereligious event, according to organizers. This is the first time it is being held in the United States.
"I think America deserves it. It is certainly a very religious country and a country of great diversity," said Andrea Bartoli, a long time Sant'Egidio member and conference organizer, who heads the Center for International Conflict Resolution at Columbia University. "Religious people do need to grow in respect and dialogue. I think that is important at a time when the role of religion in culture is very much in the debate. We are saying there is a way in which we can dialogue." [more]

Choosing Your Religion:For some Muslims, changing faith traditions endangers their lives. by Kristin E. Johnson"Shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks I befriended a twenty-year-old Egyptian woman. She had recently moved to Birmingham, Alabama to marry the owner of a Mediterranean restaurant I frequented, and I wanted her to know people in Alabama accepted and liked her regardless of some of the prejudices that surfaced after September 11. She wore a fedora over her conservative Islamic hijab (headscarf) to camouflage her religious identity. Using halting English, we shared stories of each other's lives. She was amazed to learn I had chosen the Catholic faith in adulthood, and she asked me many times for clarification. Her husband interpreted my words for her in Arabic: “My family does not belong to the same faith tradition as me,” I said. “I used to belong to another faith community, but I chose a different religion.” She gasped, gripping the bottom of her headscarf with both hands and asked: “Nobody kill you? You not afraid someone kill you?” My young Egyptian friend asked repeatedly if I was in danger. “Of course not,” I told her. “I have never felt afraid to choose my own religious path.” ." [more]

XLT is a night that is dedicated to Praise and Worship, a guest speaker, and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The focus is on the high school teens but all are welcome to this awesome event. Think of it as a 1 1/2 hour mini-Tahoe experience. If you or your youth group has never experienced this before, I highly reccommend this totally Catholic experience. XLT is happening monthly at Holy Family, one Wednesday a month. Don't be surprised if I ask any of you to be guest speakers in the nearby future. Young Adult White Mountain Apache Trip
You are invited to examine Native American culture and visit ancient historical sites on the Apache, Navajo and Hopi Indian reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. We will do volunteer work on the Apache reservation and participate and observe ancient Native American rituals, possibly including the Apache Puberty rites, Apache sweat lodge, and attendance of a Katsina Dancing Ceremony. We will also visit ancient Anasazi archaelogical sites in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico and visit Canyon de Shelly on the Navajo reservation.
